When I first set foot in a newsroom nearly two decades ago, I could never have imagined where that path would lead. Back then, I was a young trainee reporter at the Chorley Guardian, eager to prove myself and fuelled by a passion for storytelling. Journalism was more than just a career—it was a calling.

Over the years, I climbed the ladder, working as a reporter, news editor, and eventually taking on leadership roles across some of Britain’s most iconic news brands, including The Northern Echo, Daily Express and even launching multi-million pound news projects in America for the UK’s largest commercial publisher, Reach Plc.

I’m proud to root North Squared Media in the North—a region with grit, resilience, and a unique character. My goal is to amplify the voices of businesses and individuals who have something meaningful to say, and I bring my experience, passion, and drive to every project.

I’ve had the privilege of leading editorial teams from London to New York. Closer to home, I’ve managed teams across the North, from Blackburn and Bolton to Darlington and Durham. Every step of the way, I learned not just how to tell stories but how to make them resonate—how to capture attention and, most importantly, how to keep it.

These experiences taught me the value of earned media. Anyone can pay for advertising, but getting genuine, credible media coverage? That’s an art—and one I’ve spent years perfecting. I know what makes a story, how to shape it, and how to get it in front of the right people. Over the years, I’ve built a contacts book brimming with relationships forged in the trenches of breaking news and editorial deadlines.

That’s why I started North Squared Media. I wanted to take everything I’ve learned in journalism—everything about storytelling, audience engagement, and navigating the ever-changing media landscape—and put it to work for businesses in a part of the world that I love. Because I believe every business has a story to tell, and when it’s told the right way, it can transform brands, inspire audiences, and drive results.

A Career Spanning Newsrooms Across the UK and Beyond

Karl’s career began on the frontlines of local journalism, working his way up from a trainee reporter to senior editorial leadership roles at some of the UK’s most prominent news organisations. From leading teams at The Northern Echo and The Bolton News to overseeing digital transformations at The Scotsman and launching the Daily Express US in New York, Karl’s journey reflects a proven ability to adapt, innovate, and excel in fast-paced, high-pressure environments.

As the former Head of Breaking News for Reach plc, Karl directed editorial strategies across more than 80 national and regional brands, including The Mirror and Daily Record. His work involved implementing cutting-edge content strategies, building high-performing teams, and driving record-breaking digital audience growth—all while maintaining the journalistic integrity and storytelling excellence that are the hallmarks of his career.
