The former editor of The Northern Echo and Executive Editor of the Daily Express has launched a new PR and media consultancy, North Squared Media, dedicated to championing northern voices and driving growth for regional businesses and organisations.

Karl Holbrook, whose career spans leading editorial teams from New York to London, is already making waves with his new venture. The consultancy has already secured it’s first two contracts with several conversations ongoing with other business.

After nearly two decades in journalism, working on both regional and national stages, I wanted to create a business that truly champions the North – a region I’m fiercely passionate about.

Why did I set up North Squared Media?

Speaking about his decision to launch North Squared Media, Karl highlighted the importance of amplifying specifically northern voices in the current media landscape.

“After nearly two decades in journalism, working on both regional and national stages, I wanted to create a business that truly champions the North – a region I’m fiercely passionate about. From launching brands in New York to leading titles like The Northern Echo, I’ve gained unique insights into what it takes to grow audiences and tell compelling stories. Now, I want to use that experience to help businesses and organisations across the region to unlock their potential and take control of their narrative.”

Karl emphasised how crucial it is for brands and businesses to own their story in today’s fast-changing media climate.

Karl says the response to North Squared Media has been overwhelming, with numerous conversations already underway and several high-profile projects in progress.

“I’ve been blown away by the reaction to launching North Squared Media – before even officially launching I’ve managed to secure a number of contracts. It’s been non-stop. I’m thrilled to already be working on projects that are so close to my heart. Amplifying northern stories and supporting businesses to grow their audiences is incredibly exciting, and I can’t wait to see what 2025 brings.”

A proven track record

Karl’s career highlights include helping to lead Reach Plc’s US expansion, overseeing the launch of Express US in New York, and spearheading digital growth across regional titles like The Northern Echo, Bolton News, and Lancashire Telegraph.

Prolific North, the leading platform for the North’s creative and digital sectors, is among North Squared Media’s first clients. Known for its industry insights and flagship events like the Digital City Festival, Prolific North is partnering with Karl, who becoming the site’s consulting editor, to expand its reach and influence.

Karl spent almost two decades in the news media industry as a journalist and editor working around the world. He has launched major brands in New York and worked at the top of British journalism. He was Executive Editor of the Daily Express, Group Editor of The Northern Echo, Lancashire Telegraph and Bolton News and has worked for The Scotsman, Lancashire Post and has launched major digital initiatives across Reach Plc’s entire portfolio of brands from The Mirror and MEN to the Daily Record and WalesOnline. He has collected a number of prestigious industry awards along the way. He is passionate about helping brands to grow and is fiercely passionate about the North.
